2008 Celebrity Hair Colours for Spring

The sun is starting to shine, and the spring clothes are emerging in all the stores and it's certainly time to start thinking about new spring hair colours for 2008. With the arrival of spring, arrives our desire to be up to the latest trends in celebrity hair fashions for spring 2008, and the latest trends in this spring's fashion are showing lots of vibrant colors in clothing as well as some earth tones and bronzed skin. It's important to keep this fashion trend in mind when thinking about hair colour for spring 2008 and celebrities such as jennifer lopez and supermodel gisele embody spring hair colour for 2008.

The element that the two hair colours have in common for j-lo and supermodel gisele is that they both look like they've been bathed in sun with natural looking golden highlights. I would say that highlighting is the key factor to achieving a great spring hair colour for 2008. In order to achieve this look, you'll certainly need to visit a professional hairstylist in your area that can provide you with a natural highlight that accentuates the overall tones of your existing hair to give you a fresh warm spring look.

Keep in mind that everyone's situation is different, however, generally you'll want to make sure that if you want to keep with the spring hair colour trends for 2008, you'll want to go one or two shades lighter than you are right now with your highlights. Also, cool tones such as pale ash blonde or very dark brown do not match well with the colours that are coming out in the spring clothing lines for 2008.

For more celebrity hair fashion tips, keep tuned in to this blog. If you're in the Vancouver downtown area and want to come in for a free consultation feel free to call me direct at 604-315-1588 or visit me at the Red Room Salon at 948 Howe Street. Till next time!

2008 Red Carpet Hair - Simple is "In" for Red Carpet Hairstyles this Year

Whether you're going to your 2008 Grad, the prom, a wedding, or any other Red Carpet Event, the 2008 Oscars shows us that Simple is "In".

The low loose ponytail, featured in the three celebrities (Anne Hathaway, Miley Ray Cyrus, and Cate Blanchett's hair) in the images to the left was a big hit at the 80th Annual Oscars (2008) this year. I like this style because it's very easy to achieve, even if you're doing your own hair at home and this look is elegant yet relaxed.

So, it's apparent that simple is "in" but how do you go about achieving the look of Anne Hathway, Miley Ray Cyrus, or Cate Blanchett in the photos from Oscars 2008. Of these three celebrities, the celebrity that wore the low loose ponytail look the best was Miley Ray Cyrus. Paired with the low backline of her dress, Cyrus's soft waves in the ponytail and loose strands around the face really make this look stand out on her.

For those who have long wavy hair with layers around the face, it's simply a matter of putting your hair in a low ponytail, but for those who don't, there are ways you can achieve this look without going to your hairstylist.

To achieve this look for long & straight haired women, curl your hair with a curling iron before putting it in a ponytail (the curls don't have to be perfect because you're going to put them in a ponytail).

To achieve this look for very curly haired women, before you put your hair in a ponytail, blow dry your hair straight first, then smooth with an anti-frizz syrum. You don't need to flat-iron because you want the hair to still have body.

To achieve this look for short haired women, you can utilize clip-in hair extensions. When selecting a hair extension, choose a color either the same shade or lighter than your current hair color. Your hair naturally lightens towards the ends so a lighter tone will look more natural whereas if you choose a color that's too dark, it will look unnatural.

If you have a specific hair type you need a suggestion with feel free to email me for more direct advice at emily@emilyroop.com

How to Get the Right Hairstyle to Suit your Face Shape

There are seven different face shapes, as depicted in the photo of various celebrities to the left, and they include:

Oval Face Shape - The oval face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Charlize Theron to the left, is the "ideal" face shape. This face shape is balanced from top to bottom and it is one and a half times long as it is wide. Another example of a celebrity with an oval face shape is Heidi Klum.

With this face shape, you can generally get away with any hairstyle and it will still suit the shape of your face.

Square Face Shape - The square face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Angelina Jolie to the left, is wide across the forehead and generally has a more horizontal hairline with an angular and defined jaw line. Another example of a celebrity with a square face shape is Gwyneth Paltrow.

With this face shape the hairstyles that looks best are those with soft layering around the face and stay away from hard angles such as with blunt cut bangs. Waves generally work well with this face shape while more flat ironed sleek looks generally just make the face shape look harder.

Diamond Face Shape - The diamond face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Jennifer Lopez above, features a narrower forehead and jaw line, along with wide and high cheekbones. Antoher example of a celebrity with a diamond face shape is Cher.

With this face shape most hairstyles will work just as with the oval face shape, but in general it looks better with the hair pulled off the face to open up the forehead. I would stay away from long side-swept bangs.

Oblong Face Shape - The oblong face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Sarah Jessica Parker above, features a long face and squared off chin. Another example of a celebrity with an oblong face shape is Jennifer Aniston.

With this face shape the hairstyles that looks best are those with bangs which tend to visually shorten the face. Bobs that are cut to the chin line will not only shorten the face but generally look better with this face shape. Longer cuts will also work, but it's important again to have bangs covering the forehead to give the visual effect of shortening the face.

Heart Face Shape - The heart face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Reese Witherspoon above, features a forehead which is the widest part of the face, and gradually narrows in to a pointed chin. Another example of a celebrity with a heart face shape is Rihanna.

With this face shape the hairstyle that looks best is a longer fringe parted in the middle since it will narrow the forehead. I would stay away from layers that come into the face around the chin area because this will accentuate the pointed chin.

Round Face Shape - The round face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Kirsten Dunst above, features a large curved forehead with a rounded chin and full cheeks, along with a face that has very few angles. Another celebrity with a round face shape is Mandy Moore.

With this face shape the hairstyles that look best are those with layers that start at the cheeks and graduate into a longer haircut. If you are going to cut your hair into a bob make sure that it is shorter in the back and longer in the front and that the front come down to just below the chin. Stay away from short bangs with this face shape because it will make the face look shorter, but long side swept bangs that connect to the layering around your face can look good with this face shape.

Triangle Face Shape - The triangular face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Kate Hudson above, features a forehead which is the narrowest part of the face and a chin that gradually widens to an angular wide jawline. Another example of a celebrity with a triangular face shape is Queen Latifah.

With this face shape the hairstyles that look best are those with longer hair and longer layers starting at the jaw line. Stay away with bangs for this face shape because it's only going to make the forehead look more narrow.

While these are general tips based on face shapes, every situation is different. Also, people can sometimes be a combination of different face shapes. If you need advice on your specific situation, feel free to email me a photo with your situation to emily@emilyroop.com.

2008 Hottest Hairstyles for Men

It's almost as if 2007 rang in just a short while ago, and here we are at the dawn of another year. And, with a new year, comes new hairstyles, or of course the reinvention and renewal of hairstyles from the past.

Since I haven't really talked about men's hairstyles, I figured my first blog for 2008 hairstyles, should definitely be something for men, and while you wouldn't think that men would read this blog, you all have told me in person that you do, so this one's for you!

George Clooney and David Bekham are by far some of the most recognizable style icons of our time. Both Clooney and Bekham have also gone through several hair transformations from long, to short and everything in between.

While different hairstyles have come and gone, I feel strongly that two of the hottest trends for 2008 are the short, cleaner cut look as seen in Clooney and the mid-hair length ultra styled rugged look as seen in Bekham.

George Clooney's cut is nice because it requires very little styling and product, yet still looks well groomed and professional even while sporting the scruff. This hairstyle is easy to achieve but you'll need to get it cut approximately every three to four weeks to maintain the look. It has to be cut short regularly on the sides to keep it trimmed around the ears and loses its shape fairly quickly if not properly maintained. This look works for every type of lifestyle, from the professional white collar workers to athletes.

David Bekham's cut has much more of a rugedness and it seems this edgy almost unkept type look seems to be growing in popularity, especially with younger men. Bekham's hairstyle is cut almost the same length throughout the hair with lots of texturizing, and has also been bleached at the tips. This color can also be achieved by highlighting and creates and adds to the overall texture of the style. The upkeep, however, on this hairstyle is better in comparison to the Clooney cut because of the nature of the unkept style, however, it does require more product and a bit more time styling it.

No matter what direction you want to go in, lots of people are looking for a new look for the New Year and if you're in the Vancouver area and want a professional style & cut from me don't hesitate to call for an appointment at 604-315-1588. Time slots book up fast so be sure to call early for your appointment.

Take care and Happy New Year and Holidays to Everyone!

Holiday Hair Tips from Vancouver Hairstylist Emily

It's been a few weeks since I've written in my blog and it's certainly been a very busy time. My move to the Red Room Salon on Howe Street has been terrific with little in the way of having to adjust since the stylists there are great and the management is extremely helpful. And, now that we're entering into the Holidays and the season for those very memorable "Christmas Parties" we all want to make sure that we're looking great, like Marcia Cross's lucious locks.

The best way to achieve the look seen in Cross's picture would be to blow dry your hair using a round brush and a volumizing lotion or mousse (I like Pureology's Power Dressing) and then using a large barreled curling iron, you would curl the hair away from the face and finish with hairspray.

So, I would definitely suggest trying to achieve a natural curly lock look because it's classy, hip and show's that you've got a great senes of style when done right. If you don't think that you can achieve this look yourself at home, then be sure to book an appointment early with your hairstylist this Holiday season. Since the Holiday's are such a busy season for hair, the good appointments fill up fast! If you're in the downtown Vancouver area and are interested in booking an appointment with me feel free to give me a call at 604-315-1588.

In addition, hair makes a great gift for the Holiday's for men and women on your gift giving list. If you haven't already seen my gift certificates for sale on my Website, click here. They make a fabulous gift for anyone you either think may be "hair challenged" or just a great gift for that special someone to show them that you care and want them to look their best!

Until next time...

The Red Room Salon Vancouver

The Red Room Salon in Vancouver is a trendy, hip & fashionable salon located in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Years ago, when I was looking for a salon, I had come across the Red Room. It was the stylish new salon that had hit the Vancouver scene.
Now, years, later, I'm excited to announce that I'm now a part of this trendy salon with its edgy red interior paint, chic decor, brand new management and team of talented stylists. While the decision for me to join this talented team was rather sudden, it certainly suits me better.
My clients this past week and a half have been raving about the salon and have had nothing but good things to say about it. It certainly "fits" me better. Customer service here is excellent, and the team focuses on the importance of a customer's needs rather than their own.
Come check me out at the Red Room Salon at 948 Howe street or call 604-315-1588 to book an appointment or consultation.
The Red Room - Chic, stylish, & edgy.

The Do's & Don'ts of Bangs

Bangs are a nice way to add flare to your hairstyle, buts it's important to know that only certain styles will work with certain hair types and certain face shapes.

Mena Suvari's thick blunt-cut bangs, while I like the style, they're high maintenance because they need to be blow dryed & straightened every day and they need to be cut every couple of weeks in order to keep the shape. This style works best on people who already have straight hair naturally and oval or long faced shapes.

Paris Hilton's whispy side parted bangs are a much easier style to maintain and will work on a variety of hair textures and face shapes. Bangs with a whispy texturized finish are easier to grow out and will look good whether they're straight or curly. If you cut them shorter, they can be worn forward or to the side, and longer fringes are nice when they're connected to longer layers framing the face.

What I would recommend for anyone that has a long hair style with bangs is to go and get your bangs trimmed by your hairstylist in between hair cuts. This way your haircut stays looking fresh and you won't be so tempted to cut them yourself (like some of my clients have sometimes been known to do!).

:-)
