If you are getting married in 2009 it's time to find your wedding hairstylist and makeup artist, and start thinking about what kind of look you want to go for.

Hot Trend

When I'm trying to choose a style for a bride or her bridesmaids, I look to the red carpet. One trend that has been very popular on the red carpet lately is the messy french braid. What I like about this trend is that, unlike many other bridal hairstyles, the interest is in the front. I've seen so many brides choose styles with beautiful intricate patterns in the back, but from the front don't look like anything too special. When you are getting your wedding photos taken, they are of your face, not the back of your head, so it make sense to have a hairstyle that looks good from the front as well as the back.

The french braid can be worked into a variety of different styles depending on the type of look you are going for. Sarah Michelle Gellar (left), Amanda Bynes (centre), and Anne Hathaway (right) depict 3 different versions of this trend.
Gellar's style is the most modern, and my personal favorite, with messy curls pinned loosely in the back. This style works well with a formal or casual dress, and is appropriate for both daytime and evening weddings.

Bynes's style is soft and youthful, with the majority of the hair left down in loose waves. This style is best for outdoor daytime weddings, but by moving the part to the side, and with a little more finish on the hair that is left down, it can be transformed into a more sophisticated evening look.

Hathaway's style is the most polished, with a smoother braid and a neat bun in the back. This style is appropriate for a formal dress and formal settings, and works well with a veil.

Choosing A Style

Before choosing your wedding hairstyle and makeup, it is important to take into consideration: the theme of your wedding, the style of your dress, whether or not you are wearing a veil, and what kind of setting the wedding is taking place in. But above all you feel good about the way you look. If you choose a style that is too different from the way you would usually style your hair, or apply a lot more, or a lot less makeup than you're used to, you will only end up feeling uncomfortable. Meaning that if you never wear your hair up, then you probably aren't going to like the way it looks up on your wedding day either. The best wedding look for you is usually just a more glamorous version of the way you style your own hair, and do your own makeup everyday. If you really want to try something different then make sure you have a trial on a day that you can wear the hair and makeup out somewhere that you'll be seen, and see how it makes you feel. If you feel good, then you know it will be ok for the wedding, but if you do feel uncomfortable, then it's better to know it before the wedding day.

If you have any specific questions about wedding hair or makeup, don't hesitate to ask emily@emilyroop.com

Hair colour for men. How to do it right.

I thought it would be appropriate to follow up my last blog about hairstyles for men with a blog about hair colouring for men. Many men tend to shy away from colouring their hair, but colouring/highlighting can be great for blending away gray or enhancing your haircut. The best looking colours for men are the colours that look like they could be natural, so you want to stay away from anything too bright, or too different from your natural hair colour.

Blonde Hair

My personal opinion is that all lighter hair (every shade from light blonde to dark blonde or light brown, and every length) looks better when you add some highlights. To get a natural look you want thin evenly spaced highlights that are 2 or 3 shades lighter than your natural hair colour. The idea is to recreate the colour your hair turns after being in the sun, so it's ok to go a little lighter on the top of your head where the sun would naturally hit it.

Red Hair

Lighter more ginger coloured red heads also look great with highlights. By adding some blonde highlights to ginger hair you'll get an overall effect of a warm golden blonde. Those few men and women who have that true red hair colour usually look best keeping their natural colour at least until it starts tuning gray.

Dark Hair

For dark haired men (ranging from medium brown to black) it really depends on the hairstyle. Shorter haircuts generally look better left natural, or sometimes coloured darker. Short dark hair won't naturally lighten much in the sun, so lightening it looks unnatural, but for longer styles adding subtle highlights, staying within about 2 shades of your natural hair colour, will look fairly natural, and it will give depth and texture to the style.

Gray Hair

If your hair is under 40% gray, and you want to cover the gray, then doing an all over colour that is close to your natural hair colour is the best option. I would recommend using a semi-permanent colour that is one shade lighter than your natural hair, but in an ash tone (rather than a natural tone). Over time all colours will become warmer, so using an ash toned colour will help prevent your hair from turning red/orange. Using a semi-permanent colour will help prevent getting a root line, and using a slightly lighter colour will blend the gray in better and look more natural. If you have more than 40% gray then doing an all over colour will give you an obvious root line, even if you use a semi-permanent colour. At this stage I would suggest either letting it go natural, highlighting or lowlighting. If you natural colour is blonde, light brown or red then adding highlights will blend the gray into your hair and give you a blonde look overall. If your natural colour is medium brown to black then adding lowlights will give you an overall salt and pepper look (but more pepper than your current colour). When low-lighting your hair you want to use either black or dark ash brown.

Feel free to email me at emily@emilyroop.com if you have any specific questions regarding colour, or if you are thinking of colouring your hair for the first time and need some professional advice.

2008 Hottest Hairstyles for Men!

I always tend to focus more on female hairstyles when writing my blog even though at least half my clientele is male. Maybe this is because the majority of my male clients ask for variations of the same hairstyle (short in the back and sides, and a little longer and messy on top), and very few of them colour their hair. It's not that there is anything wrong with this popular style, but there are many other options when it comes to hairstyles and hair colours for men. I would like to start out by suggesting some alternatives to the standard men's haircut that are still trendy and sexy.

One look that never goes out of style is the buzz cut (as seen on celebs such as Matthew Fox, and David Beckham). This style is clean, simple, requires little or no styling, and works with every hair type. Even though this is a style that you could probably achieve with the help of a friend and some drug store bought clippers, the touch of a professional stylist always helps. Justin Timberlake's cut is an example of a slightly longer version of the buzz cut in which the sides are kept clean and short, but the top and back have been left a little longer. To maintain a very short style like this you will need to visit your stylist every 3 to 4 weeks.

If you don't want to buzz it all off then you could try growing it long. The long hairstyles that are popular today are masculine and well groomed, not like the wild rocker hair that was popular in the 80's. Actors: Josh Holloway and Adrien Grenier, and models: Javier de Miguel and Andres Segura are a few examples of modern long hairstyles for men. Whether you wear it curly or straight, brushed forwards or back the style is more or less the same. The back is cut to around the middle of the neck, and it's slightly layered throughout. Mathias Lauridisen's cut is an example of a variation of the long men's hairstyle in which the back is cut shorter and the front left long. To maintain a longer hairstyle you want to make sure you visit your stylist every 6 weeks.

If you have any specific questions about hairstyles for men then feel free to write me at emily@emilyroop.com

Choosing the Right Hair Colour for your Hair

Being in the hair industry as long as I have, I've had all sorts of people come to me seeking damage control for their hair colour. Most of the time people go wrong with colour because they have chosen the wrong colour for them, or because they have unrealistic colour goals. The following are a few important tips to help avoid those "colour disasters" that far too many people are familiar with.

Tip #1 Don't go more than 3 shades lighter or 3 shades darker than your natural colour. Going too light or too dark will not only look unnatural, but it will also cause a lot more damage (especially when going lighter), and keeping up with the regrowth can get very expensive.

If you are planning to go darker using a semi-permanent colour will be less damaging, and will fade out gradually, which will help you avoid getting root lines. Semi-permanent colours are also easier to reverse if you decide you want to be lighter again.

If you are planning to go lighter I am always an advocate for highlights rather than solid colours. Highlights, when done properly are more natural looking , and don't have to be done as often as solid colours.

Tip #2 Take a closer look at the colour of your eyes. We all have more than one colour in the iris of our eyes. There is a background colour mixed with flecks of another colour or two. The combination makes up the overall eye colour. The colour of the flecks in your eyes can tell you if you will look better in cool tones or warm tones. For example, someone with blue eyes with white, grey, or black flecks will look best with a cool hair colour, where as someone with blue eyes with yellow, gold or amber flecks will look better with a warm hair colour.

Tip #3 Go lighter and warmer as you get older. Over time not only your hair, but also your skin looses it's pigmentation, and dark, dull hair colours will only wash you out even more. Blue-black hair may look great on a 19 year old with clear skin, and rosy cheeks, but on almost anyone else it looks harsh. Lighter colours will also blend better with greying hair. This doesn't mean that once you hit a certain age you suddenly have to go blonde even if you've had dark hair all your life. For best results I suggest a slow transition, such as one shade lighter every 10 years or so.

Tip #4 Once you have a colour you like stick with it, or at least with something similar to it. The biggest mistake people make when it comes to colour is trying to change their colour too often, and too quickly. Major changes to your colour should be made over several visits to your hairstylist, and not all in one shot. Once your hair has been coloured dark that dark colour can only be removed with bleach (or some equally damaging highlift colours, or colour removers), when your hair has been coloured red there will be a redish tone to any colour you add after, and if your hair has been bleached out blonde it won't hold new colours properly and it's likely to fade to an unflattering shade. So when you're planning a major colour change be realistic about what your hair can and can't handle.

For more tips on hair colour, and cool vs warm tones, feel free to email me at emily@emilyroop.com

Summer Hair Trends 2008 by Vancouver Hair Stylist Emily

It's summertime at last, and with the summer comes a more relaxed approach to fashion. In the hot weather you wear less clothing, and less makeup, and the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of time with a hot blowdryer on your hair, so ponytails become an everyday occurrence.

While a ponytail is a nice easy way to deal with unruly hair, you do need to be careful not to overdo it. Repeatedly pulling your hair back tightly, and then wrapping an elastic around it can cause strain to the hair and scalp and eventually lead to breakage. Pinning or clipping your hair up loosely will give you a softer look, and be easier on your hair. Instead of reaching for the elastic, go shopping for some fun hair accessories, and try some different ways of putting your hair up. Loose, messy hair is very fashionable right now, which is great news for your hair, because the looser the style the less damage it will cause your hair.

If you have long hair try a loose braid off to one side like Jessica Alba's. If you have short or medium length hair you can create Elisha Cuthbert's messy updo by piling your hair at the base of you hair line, and securing it with bobby pins. Both of these styles will work with most hair types, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

But the most important thing for summer no matter how you wear your hair is a good leave in conditioner with sun protection. Many different brands of leave in conditioners have SPF in them, all you need to do is read the labels. UV rays will dry out your hair and bleach out your colour, so treat your hair like you would your skin, and protect it from the sun, unless you want to wear a hat all summer.

2008 Celebrity Hair Colours for Spring

The sun is starting to shine, and the spring clothes are emerging in all the stores and it's certainly time to start thinking about new spring hair colours for 2008. With the arrival of spring, arrives our desire to be up to the latest trends in celebrity hair fashions for spring 2008, and the latest trends in this spring's fashion are showing lots of vibrant colors in clothing as well as some earth tones and bronzed skin. It's important to keep this fashion trend in mind when thinking about hair colour for spring 2008 and celebrities such as jennifer lopez and supermodel gisele embody spring hair colour for 2008.

The element that the two hair colours have in common for j-lo and supermodel gisele is that they both look like they've been bathed in sun with natural looking golden highlights. I would say that highlighting is the key factor to achieving a great spring hair colour for 2008. In order to achieve this look, you'll certainly need to visit a professional hairstylist in your area that can provide you with a natural highlight that accentuates the overall tones of your existing hair to give you a fresh warm spring look.

Keep in mind that everyone's situation is different, however, generally you'll want to make sure that if you want to keep with the spring hair colour trends for 2008, you'll want to go one or two shades lighter than you are right now with your highlights. Also, cool tones such as pale ash blonde or very dark brown do not match well with the colours that are coming out in the spring clothing lines for 2008.

For more celebrity hair fashion tips, keep tuned in to this blog. I like this style because it's very easy to achieve, even if you're doing your own hair at home and this look is elegant yet relaxed.

So, it's apparent that simple is "in" but how do you go about achieving the look of Anne Hathway, Miley Ray Cyrus, or Cate Blanchett in the photos from Oscars 2008. Of these three celebrities, the celebrity that wore the low loose ponytail look the best was Miley Ray Cyrus. Paired with the low backline of her dress, Cyrus's soft waves in the ponytail and loose strands around the face really make this look stand out on her.

For those who have long wavy hair with layers around the face, it's simply a matter of putting your hair in a low ponytail, but for those who don't, there are ways you can achieve this look without going to your hairstylist.

To achieve this look for long & straight haired women, curl your hair with a curling iron before putting it in a ponytail (the curls don't have to be perfect because you're going to put them in a ponytail).

To achieve this look for very curly haired women, before you put your hair in a ponytail, blow dry your hair straight first, then smooth with an anti-frizz syrum. You don't need to flat-iron because you want the hair to still have body.

To achieve this look for short haired women, you can utilize clip-in hair extensions. When selecting a hair extension, choose a color either the same shade or lighter than your current hair color. Your hair naturally lightens towards the ends so a lighter tone will look more natural whereas if you choose a color that's too dark, it will look unnatural.

If you have a specific hair type you need a suggestion with feel free to email me for more direct advice at emily@emilyroop.com

How to Get the Right Hairstyle to Suit your Face Shape

There are seven different face shapes, as depicted in the photo of various celebrities to the left, and they include:

Oval Face Shape - The oval face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Charlize Theron to the left, is the "ideal" face shape. This face shape is balanced from top to bottom and it is one and a half times long as it is wide. Another example of a celebrity with an oval face shape is Heidi Klum.

With this face shape, you can generally get away with any hairstyle and it will still suit the shape of your face.

Square Face Shape - The square face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Angelina Jolie to the left, is wide across the forehead and generally has a more horizontal hairline with an angular and defined jaw line. Another example of a celebrity with a square face shape is Gwyneth Paltrow.

With this face shape the hairstyles that looks best are those with soft layering around the face and stay away from hard angles such as with blunt cut bangs. Waves generally work well with this face shape while more flat ironed sleek looks generally just make the face shape look harder.

Diamond Face Shape - The diamond face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Jennifer Lopez above, features a narrower forehead and jaw line, along with wide and high cheekbones. Antoher example of a celebrity with a diamond face shape is Cher.

With this face shape most hairstyles will work just as with the oval face shape, but in general it looks better with the hair pulled off the face to open up the forehead. I would stay away from long side-swept bangs.

Oblong Face Shape - The oblong face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Sarah Jessica Parker above, features a long face and squared off chin. Another example of a celebrity with an oblong face shape is Jennifer Aniston.

With this face shape the hairstyles that looks best are those with bangs which tend to visually shorten the face. Bobs that are cut to the chin line will not only shorten the face but generally look better with this face shape. Longer cuts will also work, but it's important again to have bangs covering the forehead to give the visual effect of shortening the face.

Heart Face Shape - The heart face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Reese Witherspoon above, features a forehead which is the widest part of the face, and gradually narrows in to a pointed chin. Another example of a celebrity with a heart face shape is Rihanna.

With this face shape the hairstyle that looks best is a longer fringe parted in the middle since it will narrow the forehead. I would stay away from layers that come into the face around the chin area because this will accentuate the pointed chin.

Round Face Shape - The round face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Kirsten Dunst above, features a large curved forehead with a rounded chin and full cheeks, along with a face that has very few angles. Another celebrity with a round face shape is Mandy Moore.

With this face shape the hairstyles that look best are those with layers that start at the cheeks and graduate into a longer haircut. If you are going to cut your hair into a bob make sure that it is shorter in the back and longer in the front and that the front come down to just below the chin. Stay away from short bangs with this face shape because it will make the face look shorter, but long side swept bangs that connect to the layering around your face can look good with this face shape.

Triangle Face Shape - The triangular face shape, as shown in the celebrity photo of Kate Hudson above, features a forehead which is the narrowest part of the face and a chin that gradually widens to an angular wide jawline. Another example of a celebrity with a triangular face shape is Queen Latifah.

With this face shape the hairstyles that look best are those with longer hair and longer layers starting at the jaw line. Stay away with bangs for this face shape because it's only going to make the forehead look more narrow.

While these are general tips based on face shapes, every situation is different. Also, people can sometimes be a combination of different face shapes. If you need advice on your specific situation, feel free to email me a photo with your situation to emily@emilyroop.com.

2008 Hottest Hairstyles for Men

It's almost as if 2007 rang in just a short while ago, and here we are at the dawn of another year. And, with a new year, comes new hairstyles, or of course the reinvention and renewal of hairstyles from the past.

Since I haven't really talked about men's hairstyles, I figured my first blog for 2008 hairstyles, should definitely be something for men, and while you wouldn't think that men would read this blog, you all have told me in person that you do, so this one's for you!

George Clooney and David Bekham are by far some of the most recognizable style icons of our time. Both Clooney and Bekham have also gone through several hair transformations from long, to short and everything in between.

While different hairstyles have come and gone, I feel strongly that two of the hottest trends for 2008 are the short, cleaner cut look as seen in Clooney and the mid-hair length ultra styled rugged look as seen in Bekham.

George Clooney's cut is nice because it requires very little styling and product, yet still looks well groomed and professional even while sporting the scruff. This hairstyle is easy to achieve but you'll need to get it cut approximately every three to four weeks to maintain the look. It has to be cut short regularly on the sides to keep it trimmed around the ears and loses its shape fairly quickly if not properly maintained. This look works for every type of lifestyle, from the professional white collar workers to athletes.

David Bekham's cut has much more of a rugedness and it seems this edgy almost unkept type look seems to be growing in popularity, especially with younger men. Bekham's hairstyle is cut almost the same length throughout the hair with lots of texturizing, and has also been bleached at the tips. This color can also be achieved by highlighting and creates and adds to the overall texture of the style. The upkeep, however, on this hairstyle is better in comparison to the Clooney cut because of the nature of the unkept style, however, it does require more product and a bit more time styling it.

No matter what direction you want to go in, lots of people are looking for a new look for the New Year and if you're in the Vancouver area and want a professional style & cut from me don't hesitate to call for an appointment at 604-315-1588. Time slots book up fast so be sure to call early for your appointment.

Take care and Happy New Year and Holidays to Everyone!

Holiday Hair Tips from Vancouver Hairstylist Emily

e It's been a few weeks since I've written in my blog and it's certainly been a very busy time. My move to my new Salon on Howe Street has been terrific with little in the way of having to adjust since the stylists there are great and the management is extremely helpful. And, now that we're entering into the Holidays and the season for those very memorable "Christmas Parties" we all want to make sure that we're looking great, like Marcia Cross's lucious locks.

The best way to achieve the look seen in Cross's picture would be to blow dry your hair using a round brush and a volumizing lotion or mousse (I like Pureology's Power Dressing) and then using a large barreled curling iron, you would curl the hair away from the face and finish with hairspray.

So, I would definitely suggest trying to achieve a natural curly lock look because it's classy, hip and show's that you've got a great senes of style when done right. If you don't think that you can achieve this look yourself at home, then be sure to book an appointment early with your hairstylist this Holiday season. Since the Holiday's are such a busy season for hair, the good appointments fill up fast! If you're in the downtown Vancouver area and are interested in booking an appointment with me feel free to give me a call at 604-315-1588.

In addition, hair makes a great gift for the Holiday's for men and women on your gift giving list. If you haven't already seen my gift certificates for sale on my Website, click here. This style works best on people who already have straight hair naturally and oval or long faced shapes.

Paris Hilton's whispy side parted bangs are a much easier style to maintain and will work on a variety of hair textures and face shapes. Bangs with a whispy texturized finish are easier to grow out and will look good whether they're straight or curly. If you cut them shorter, they can be worn forward or to the side, and longer fringes are nice when they're connected to longer layers framing the face.

What I would recommend for anyone that has a long hair style with bangs is to go and get your bangs trimmed by your hairstylist in between hair cuts. This way your haircut stays looking fresh and you won't be so tempted to cut them yourself (like some of my clients have sometimes been known to do!).

:-)

Celebrity Hair Styles

Straight sleek hair is out. Volume is in.

Celebrity's such as Carrie Underwood, Jessica Biel, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Lindsay Lohan are just some examples of the celebrity trend that has been moving away from the straight sleek hair look and more towards the volumized hair look. Whether you're looking for Carrie's ringlets or Lohan's messy natural look, some must haves are a large barreled curling iron and a shine serum (I like to use Silk Touch by N-VIE - it's great for the hair but you can also use it on your skin).

For the curling iron, I would suggest a 1-1/2 inch because it's nice and versatile. You can create different looks depending on the size of sections that you use. A smaller section will create a tighter more defined curl such as Underwood's, a larger section will give you a looser wave such as Lohan's or Biel's. Also, if you brush the hair out after using the curling iron, it softens the look.

A good shine serum is important for anyone living in a city like Vancouver or New York (for anyone with long hair), because it makes the hair soft and controls fizz in our rainy weather.

2007 Favorite Fall Hair Colors from Vancouver Hairstylist Emily

My favorite colors for the fall of 2007 are three-toned blondes (seen in Nicole Richie's hair to the left), rich chestnut brown (seen in Eva Longoria's hair to the left), and golden brown with carmel highlights (seen in Jessica Alba's hair to the left).

Nicole Richie's hair, a three-toned blonde, works best on naturally dark blonde or light brown hair. The first color is your natural color, the second color is a warm blonde one or two shades lighter than your natural color, and the third color is a platinum or white blonde. The hair is highlighted by alternating foils of one warm blonde to one platinum blonde. These three colors blend together to create a beautifully-dimensional shade of blonde.

Eva Longoria's hair, a rich chestnut brown, is a solid color that works on a variety of skin tones from fair to dark; it would look good on most cooler skin tones. However, I wouldn't recommend this for anyone with a lot of red in their skin.

Jessica Alba's hair, a golden brown, has a base of about a level 5 which could be natural or colored, but works best with a neutral tone. Then, the hair is highlighted with a golden or caramel color. This looks best on people with golden or tanned skin like Alba's.

I wouldn't say that any of these are more popular becaues it really honestly depends on the individaul. If you're looking to achieve any of these hair colors this season, take into account your skin tone, and your natural hair color (or your current hair color).

If you have a specific question, or need specific advice on your hair, send an email with a picture to me at emily@emilyroop.com.

Achieving Victoria Bekham's New Hair Style

Victoria Bekham's modern twist on the graduated bob has spawned a revitalization of this 1920s & 1960s hair style. We'll be seeing many variations of the bob this season, but Victoria's is number one because it's flattering for most face shapes, it's funky & cute, and can be styled to create different looks.

Victoria's hair is cut to the hairline at the nape of her neck with short layers in the back, graduating to longer layers in the front, the longest piece reaching her chin, providing for a dramatic effect. Victoria's hair is also cut asymetrically so that it's longer one side, and she usually wears the other side tucked behind her ear. For a more versatile cut, I would leave long pieces on both sides of the face, and you can still achieve the same look just by tucking one side behind your ear.

To style this haircut, you need to blow dry the hair as straight as possible and then flat iron the long pieces in the front. If you want to use product in your hair I would recommend using volumizer (I would recommend Pureology Root Lift) before blow drying.

2007 Fall Hair Fashions from Vancouver Hairstylist Emily

In the last year or so we've seen a lot of long layered haircuts styled in curls or waves. While you would think that this trend may have faded, it's still a very popular style for this season, and especially good for colder environments such as Vancouver weather since curls are much more forgiving in the rain than straight hair.

Most people can't afford to visit a stylist everyday to get their hair done, so here's a few tips on how you can achieve this style on your own at home. For Reese's natural looking wave (shown in the top picture on the left), use Pureology Real Curl applied to damp hair and then blow dry with a diffuser. For Simpson's more finished, smoother wave (shown in the bottom picture to the left), use hot rollers on dry hair (see this instructional video).

Most people think they should go darker in the fall & winter with the darker weather, but I tend to disagree and discourage my clients from doing so. Darker hair only makes your skin look paler and emphasizes your fading tan. If you want to change something, try adding warmer tones to your hair such as gold or auburn highlights.

A dull color will only make you feel more depressed in the rainy, colder Vancouver-style weather we tend to get in the fall and winter.

Also, don't forget that if you have any specific questions for me that you want answered, don't hesitate to send me an email and I'll do my best to answer all of your questions.

Vancouver Hairstylist Emily's New Hair Tips Blog!

Hi everyone and welcome to my new blog on hair tips.
